Challenge
India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade updated gold import duty rules, requiring detailed breakdowns of contained metal value, origin certificates signed by Ghanaian authorities, and assay reports in metric units. The buyer faced potential 18% duty reassessment without compliant paperwork.
Solution
We restructured the commercial invoice to itemize contained gold value, obtained a countersigned certificate of origin from Ghana’s Minerals Commission in Takoradi, and converted all assay data to grams and percentages. Mumbai customs accepted the file on first review; no duty penalty applied.
